Environmental Considerations

Environment: rewarding excellence in environmental effectiveness. Packaging design and systems that facilitate the best use of materials, containers and systems throughout a product’s journey will be awarded.

Technical developments, which either provide optimisation of material usage or new developments that demonstrate environmental and commercial advantages, will be rewarded. Entries should take each link in the packaging supply chain into consideration. Packs or systems should protect products from the rigours of production facilities through distribution, in-store, consumer use and final disposal.

Designs may include material optimisation, use of recycled content, enhanced recyclability, new and innovative materials; closed loop, reuse, refill and dispensing systems; and packaging that delivers optimal product usage.

Entrants should demonstrate holistic design solutions that lead to net reductions in packaging food waste while ensuring that the product is sufficiently protected. Consideration should be given to primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.

Entry fees

Single pack entry: £140 + VAT
7 packs or more : £115 per pack + VAT
Packs entered into multiple categories: £140 or £115 per pack as above, and £75 per additional category + VAT

After you have entered online you will be asked to send in 2 complete packs with product and 1 empty pack without product. In the case of the transit and retail ready categories you will be asked to supply one complete and one empty/flat pack. It is most important that these are despatched the week commencing 9 February. Full details will be given after you have entered online.

PACKAGING MACHINERY AWARD OF EXCELLENCE


Awarded for significant advances in machinery design or development which improve the performance of a machine or system, to provide customers with flexibility, reliability, better performance, speed and improved efficiency, as well as contributing to a more sustainable production environment.

Judges will be asked to consider from the following criteria. The Award will be given for significant advances in some or all of these:

Technical Development - flexibility, reliability, better performance; speed; use of robotics; improved efficiency; lower maintenance; footprint; speed and ease of product changeovers.
Sustainability - operational energy and water usage, heat and material savings, carbon footprint, use of materials in construction …
Material Interface - working with material suppliers to create better, more sustainable packs and increased product protection and enhancement. Use of new materials, or the use of existing materials in new ways.
Innovation in PLC technology - providing better safety, security and production data.

Entries should also be supported by:-
  1. Technical specifications - essential
  2. Applications, in particular where these have been widened from the original concept
  3. Where possible video footage of machines in action.
  4. The packaged or processed product produced - essential
  5. Pictorial storyboard of machinery in action
  6. Where possible an outline of commissioning details i.e. speed, footprint, modularity, special features, product ...
  7. The equipment may form part of a filling/packing line or be part of the pack manufacturing line
  8. Packaging Machinery and Equipment should be available in the UK market place.
  9. Entries can be made in conjunction with the customer or a joint supplier.

In recognition of the key contribution of individuals to the success of the packaging industry though outstanding performance in their field.

Best Young Packaging Professional
For outstanding performance from a young packaging professional in 2008. Do you know a colleague who is worthy of this award? Then please put your nomination forward. There is no charge for entry.

For outstanding performance from a Designer or Design Group in 2008.

Who should enter?

Starpack is open to the whole packaging community, whether a manufacturer, converter, supplier, processor, packer filler, brand owner, end user, packaging designer or marketeer and the entered pack must have at least one of these connections with the UK. It is necessary to seek permission from the brand owner to enter. We are here to award outstanding achievements so enter now and get yourself recognised!
We have taken on board comments from the packaging community and we want to give everyone more opportunities to enter. We also want to ensure the categories are clearly described and are relevant to today’s market, so each award is understood, and therefore valued, not just by the business, but by our customers – the brand owners and retailers.

Return of pack entries

To avoid unnecessary handling, the organisers ask that the return of empty packs and entries of comparatively small value should not be requested. In all other cases, entrants must arrange to collect the packs after judging in accordance with instructions when registering online. Entries will be disposed of at the discretion of IOP: The Packaging Society if they are NOT collected in accordance with such instructions. The organisers cannot accept responsibility for any loss or damage of packages. Entrants should, if required take out their own insurance cover for their packages.

We will ask for permission to retain winning entries and will make every effort to display a selection at the dinner and awards evening. Following on from that we would wish to display for a minimum of twelve months in the auditorium at the Packaging Society’s brand new exhibition and office premises in Grantham.
