Technical innovation Awards
Designed to reward outstanding achievements in technical innovation across the full range of materials, structures, components and developments for consumer convenience, these awards are given for significant improvements in the technical performance of packaging to deliver benefits to the marketplace.
Environment: rewarding excellence in environmental effectiveness. Packaging design and systems that facilitate the best use of materials, containers and systems throughout a product’s journey will be awarded.
Technical developments, which either provide optimisation of material usage or new developments that demonstrate environmental and commercial advantages, will be rewarded. Entries should take each link in the packaging supply chain into consideration. Packs or systems should protect products from the rigours of production facilities through distribution, in-store, consumer use and final disposal.
Designs may include material optimisation, use of recycled content, enhanced recyclability, new and innovative materials; closed loop, reuse, refill and dispensing systems; and packaging that delivers optimal product usage.
Entrants should demonstrate holistic design solutions that lead to net reductions in packaging food waste while ensuring that the product is sufficiently protected. Consideration should be given to primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.
Starpack 2009 will include two environmental categories to represent the increasing number of developments and interest in sustainable packaging. The two separate awards were introduced to great acclaim in 2008.
- Environment – Excellence in Packaging Optimisation: awarded for technical developments that impact on sustainability through the mass reduction of material and energy usage.
Sponsored by WRAP (Waste Resources Action Programme)
- Environment - New Developments: awarded for new, innovative and longer term solutions that stretch the boundaries of current thinking to create sustainable solutions for future generations. These could include refill systems, returnable packaging, new materials, combined machinery and material advances; in fact any development that challenges the traditional approach to environmental/sustainable packaging design.
Sponsored by WRAP (Waste Resources Action Programme)
Consumer Facing Innovation: awarded for excellence in pack functionality and/or developments that provide significant improvements in technical performance leading to advances in consumer benefits. Sponsored by the Packaging Professional
Technical Development: awarded for a significant and innovative developments that improves the performance of a material, a manufacturing method or conversion process.
Component Development: awarded for a significant technical advance that progresses technical design of a component to deliver advances in performance and new or improved pack functionality.
